The oil cooler is a device that accelerates the lubrication of the oil to keep it at a lower temperature. In a high-performance, high-power reinforced engine, an oil cooler must be installed due to a large heat load. The oil cooler is arranged in the lubricating oil circuit and works in the same way as the radiator.
1. Engine oil cooler: Cooling the lubricating oil of the engine, keeping the temperature of the oil reasonable (90-120 degrees), and make the viscosity is reasonable; the installation position is in the cylinder part of the engine, and it is installed integrally with the casing during installation.
2. Transmission oil cooler: Cooling the lubricating oil of the transmission, installed in the lower radiator of the engine radiator or outside the transmission case, if it is air-cooled, it is installed on the front side of the radiator.
3. Exhaust gas recirculation cooler: It is a kind of exhaust gas and device used to cool part of the return to the engine cylinder, in order to reduce the content of nitrogen oxides in the vehicle exhaust.
The function of the oil cooler is to cool the oil and keep the oil temperature within the normal working range. On high-powered intensive engines, oil coolers must be installed due to the high thermal load. When the engine is running, the viscosity of the oil is reduced as the temperature increases, which reduces the lubricating ability. Therefore, some engines are equipped with an oil cooler, which serves to lower the oil temperature and maintain a certain viscosity of the lubricant. The oil cooler is arranged in the lubrication system circulating oil circuit, and its working principle is the same as that of the radiator.
Type of oil cooler
1) Air-cooled oil cooler
The core of the air-cooled oil cooler consists of a number of cooling tubes and cooling plates that are used to cool the hot oil cooler cores while the car is running. Air-cooled oil coolers require good ventilation around, and it is difficult to ensure adequate ventilation in ordinary cars, which is rarely used. Most of these coolers are used in racing cars because of the high speed of the car and the large amount of cooling air.
2) Water-cooled oil cooler
The oil cooler is placed in the cooling water circuit, and the temperature of the cooling water is used to control the temperature of the lubricating oil. When the temperature of the lubricating oil is high, it is cooled by the cooling water. When the engine is started, the heat is absorbed from the cooling water to rapidly increase the temperature of the lubricating oil. The oil cooler consists of a shell made of aluminum alloy, a front cover, a back cover and a copper core tube. In order to enhance the cooling, a heat sink is placed outside the tube. The cooling water flows outside the tube, and the lubricating oil flows in the tube, and the two exchange heat. There are also structures that allow oil to flow outside the tube while water flows within the tube.
